US President Donald Trump has announced that a new athletics competition will be held next year as part of the country’s 250th anniversary celebrations.
The event, called the “Patriot Games”, will be the first of its kind in US history and will last four days. The tournament will feature the strongest high school level athletes, with one boy and one girl representing each state and territory.
Speaking in the Oval Office, Trump specifically emphasized that there would be no mixed categories in the competition.
He firmly stated that men would not be allowed to compete in women’s sports.
The organization of the event will also involve “Freedom 250,” a group responsible for implementing official projects dedicated to the national anniversary.
According to the organization, the competition will “light a symbolic torch” for future generations of Americans.
The venue for the event and the list of sports disciplines included in the program have not yet been announced.
Democrats have sharply criticized the “Patriot Games,” comparing the project to the film “The Hunger Games.”
Other events planned as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary include a national prayer service, a parade of ships in New York Harbor, the Great American State Fair on the National Mall, and a grand fireworks display.
