Barcelona midfielder Gavi is set to be sidelined for up to five months after undergoing knee surgery to address a meniscus injury, the LaLiga champions confirmed on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Spain international, who suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in November 2023, injured his right knee during training in August after participating in Barcelona’s first two matches of the current season.
According to the club, Gavi underwent an arthroscopic procedure to repair a medial meniscus injury. The meniscus was sutured to preserve the structure, and the expected recovery period is estimated at four to five months.
“Gavi has had an arthroscopy to resolve a medial meniscus injury, which was sutured to preserve the meniscus. Recovery time is estimated at around four-five months,” Barcelona stated in an official announcement.
The setback is another blow for the LaLiga champions, who are currently second in the league table, trailing rivals Real Madrid by five points, albeit with a game in hand. Barcelona will face Real Oviedo in an upcoming league clash on Thursday, hoping to maintain pressure on the league leaders despite Gavi’s absence.
Gavi’s injury adds to Barcelona’s injury concerns, following a challenging recovery from his ACL tear last season. The young midfielder has been a key figure in Xavi Hernandez’s squad, known for his creativity, passing accuracy, and dynamic presence in the middle of the park.
The club and fans alike will now hope for a smooth rehabilitation process to ensure Gavi returns to full fitness in time for crucial league and European fixtures later this season.
