“They called and told me to resign. I didn’t leave the national team of my own accord.”
Idman.biz reports that Zira head coach Rashad Sadygov made this statement as a guest on Sportcast, a program on Idman TV.
He spoke about his departure from Azerbaijan’s U21 national team back in 2018:
“I asked them the reason, because just 20 days earlier we had sat down to talk and set goals. We wanted to finish second in the group. But then this happened, and I needed to know why.
Anyway, I wasn’t going to stay, because I’ve never had the intention of remaining where I’m not wanted.”
Sadygov added that the reasons given to him were inconsistent and vague:
“There were random explanations and different stories. As I said, it wasn’t my decision to leave. In fact, a lot more could have been achieved at that time. The team had a strong lineup.”
The former national coach pointed out that many promising players failed to progress after he left:
“Only those who played under Gurban Gurbanov – like Elvin Cafarquliyev, Toral Bayramov, Nariman Akhundzada, and Musa Gurbanli – managed to develop. The rest disappeared.
We lost at least 7-8 years.”
