Swedish forward Viktor Gyokeres, representing the Swedish national team and Sporting CP, has entered the prestigious “Club 50+ goals in a year”, having scored 50 goals in a single calendar year, as per the IFFHS.
Gyokeres is now the 25th player to achieve this milestone in the 21st century, with two months left in 2024 to potentially reach the 60-goal mark. If he succeeds, he would become only the fourth player in this era to do so, reports Idman.biz.
The record for most goals in a calendar year remains held by Lionel Messi, who scored an astonishing 91 goals for Argentina and Barcelona in 2012. Following him, Cristiano Ronaldo netted 69 goals for Portugal and Real Madrid in 2013, a record later matched by Robert Lewandowski in 2021 with Poland and Bayern Munich.
Before Gyokeres, Erling Haaland was the last to cross the 50-goal threshold, achieving this with Norway and Manchester City last year.
