Idman.biz reports that Today, 5 March is the Day of Physical Culture and Sports in Azerbaijan, according to a decree enacted by President Ilham Aliyev in 2005.
The celebration of the day on this date is not accidental. National Leader Heydar Aliyev met at the Baku Sports Palace on 5 March 1995 with the champions and prize winners of the world and European championships. That day he established the Sports Foundation and launched a new strategy on the development of physical culture and sports.

In 2006, the Ministry of Youth and Sports was reorganized by the decree of President Ilham Aliyev. As a result of the consistent efforts and successful sports policy of President Ilham Aliyev, who has been leading the National Olympic Committee since 1997, Azerbaijan has become the leading sports country in the world. In our country, attention to sports and physical education is increasing year by year. President's attention to sports, his special sensitivity to athletes, his constant concern for improving their professionalism, strengthening the material and technical base of sports, and his decisions on the creation of Olympic sports complexes and sports bases are a clear proof of this.

As a result of this, the athletes achieved great success in the Olympic Games, world and European championships. Our athletes participated in the Summer Olympic Games 7 times. During this period, 49 medals were won.

Azerbaijani representatives raised the flag 7 times at the Olympics. In addition, 14 silver and 28 bronze medals were won.
The Azerbaijani athletes are preparing at a high level to successfully continue the relay at the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games, which will be held this year. 9 of them have already advanced in 6 types to the French capital. Azerbaijani athletes will try to increase this number in the license tournaments that will take place in the coming months, and then succeed in Paris.

Achievements in team sports are also increasing year by year. Not only women's volleyball players, but also Qarabag in football, Sabah in basketball and our 3x3 teams delight the fans.

Modern Olympic sports complexes operate not only in Baku, but in all regions of Azerbaijan, and excellent sports infrastructure has been created. Baku Olympic Stadium, National Gymnastics Arena, Baku Water Sports Palace and other magnificent sports facilities have endured. As a result, our country has become a suitable place to host a number of major international competitions and world championships.

It should be noted that three games of the group stage of EURO-2020, one of the quarter-finals, and the final match of the Europa League in 2019 between Chelsea and Arsenal should be held in Baku. In addition, in 2012, the World Championship among 17-year-old girls in football, the first European Games in 2015, in 2016 the European Championship in football among boys under 17 years of age. Baku has also hosted the 2015 World Chess Cup, the 2016 World Chess Olympiad and the 2017 Islamic Games. the 42nd World Chess Olympiad, the IV Islam in 2017, the Solidarity Games and the European Women's Volleyball Championship, the World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship, and Formula-1 were held in Baku and are remembered for being organized at a high level.

These successes were achieved thanks to the successful continuation and development of the policy of high attention and care for the health of our youth, which was founded by the great leader Heydar Aliyev in Azerbaijan, under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev. Consecutive measures in this field, attention and care given to athletes, excellent sports infrastructure that meets the highest standards in our country create a strong foundation for achieving greater success in the coming years.
Azerbaijani athletes managed to continue the successes achieved at various levels in the remaining period of 2024.
