With the organization and support of the Azerbaijan Taekwondo Federation (ATF) and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Azerbaijan, the "Korean Ambassador's Cup" among young taekwondo players has been launched.
According to Idman.biz, speaking at the official opening ceremony of the tournament organized at the Sports-Health Club of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, ATF Vice President Hikmet Samadov said that the competition has become a tradition in Azerbaijan and is organized at a high level every year.
Samadov said that Azerbaijan hosted a number of international tournaments this year: "We successfully held the World Championship that coincided with the 100th anniversary of the birth of the great leader Heydar Aliyev and the 50th anniversary of World Taekwondo. In the year of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the national leader Heydar Aliyev, the "Korean Ambassador's Cup" is organized at a higher level and is more interesting."
The vice-president emphasized that the purpose of the competition is to develop relations between Azerbaijan and the Republic of Korea in the field of sports, to increase the competition experience and mastery of athletes: "I hope that tomorrow's Olympic, world and European champions will grow up among the taekwondo players competing here."
Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Azerbaijan Lee In-Yong drew attention to the traditional nature of the tournament. He said that this time the competition is of great importance as it is held in the year when the 100th anniversary of the birth of National Leader Heydar Aliyev is celebrated: "I think that the tournament is held before the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games. Also, thanks to the organization of this cup, the youth of Azerbaijan will show great interest in taekwondo and I hope that it will contribute to their successful results in the Olympics in the future."
Nijat Hasanov, deputy head of the Sports Department of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, wished success to every participant in the "Korean Ambassador's Cup" and spoke about the importance of the competition being traditional.
In the competition, taekwondo players born in 2007-2009 will fight for 10 sets of medals. Boys will decide the winner in 48 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg, 73 kg, +73 kg, and girls in 44 kg, 49 kg, 55 kg, 63 kg and +63 kg. The winners will be awarded with trophies, diplomas, medals and valuable gifts established by ATF and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea.
