Australia celebrated a golden start to the swimming world championships in Singapore, capturing both the men’s and women’s 4x100m freestyle relay titles in dramatic fashion.
Idman.biz, citing The Guardian, reports that despite early heartbreak when Sam Short lost the men’s 400m freestyle by just 0.02 seconds to Germany’s Lukas Maertens, Australia bounced back with relay dominance.
Olivia Wunsch led a thrilling comeback in the women’s final, overtaking the USA in the last 50 metres for a surprise gold in 3:30.60. The men’s team, anchored by Kyle Chalmers, followed with a world championship-record 3:08.97, outpacing Italy and the USA.
“I can’t believe it,” said Milla Jansen after her relay debut, while teammate Flynn Southam added, “We did it for the country.”
Earlier, Short dedicated his silver medal to his late aunt, while Lani Pallister finished fourth in a stacked women’s 400m won by Canada’s Summer McIntosh.
