Barcelona have reacted to Lionel Messi's decision to retire from international football following Argentina's run to the 2026 World Cup final.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Messi announced the end of his Argentina career on August 31, bringing to a close one of the most decorated international careers in football history.
"You gave everything until your very last breath. Your country and all Barcelona fans are proud of the legacy you have left behind," Barcelona wrote in a comment under Messi's post.
The 39-year-old forward made 207 appearances for Argentina, scoring 125 goals and providing 68 assists.
Messi's final tournament with the national team was the 2026 World Cup. Argentina reached the final in an attempt to defend the title they had won in Qatar four years earlier, but were beaten 1-0 by Spain after extra time.
Messi's international career included the 2022 World Cup triumph, as well as Copa America titles in 2021 and 2024. He also won Olympic gold with Argentina in 2008.
The legendary forward spent the majority of his club career at Barcelona, where he developed into one of the greatest players in football history. He made his first-team debut for the Catalan club in 2004 and remained there until 2021, winning numerous domestic and international trophies, including four UEFA Champions League titles.
Barcelona are one of Baku-based Sabah's opponents in the UEFA Champions League league phase this season. The two clubs will meet in Baku on November 25 in Matchday 5 of the league phase.
