French Ligue 1: PSG Chase the Leaders as Monaco Look to Hold on to Top Spot – İDMAN.BİZ REVIEW

The seventh round of the French Ligue 1 season is underway. Key fixtures will take place in Strasbourg, Lorient and Paris. Strasbourg will host defending champions PSG, while Monaco and Rennes will look to consolidate their positions near the top of the standings.

As İdman.Biz reports, the race for the top spots in the French championship remains tight after six rounds. Monaco lead the table unbeaten with 14 points. Lille and Rennes occupy second and third place, respectively, with 13 points each.

Lyon, Paris FC and PSG follow with 11 points apiece. The position of the defending champions is particularly noteworthy. PSG have won three of their six matches, drawn twice and suffered one defeat. Despite this, the Parisian side are just three points behind leaders Monaco.

The seventh round began on October 16 with Le Mans taking on Toulouse. The visitors secured a 3-0 victory. The result took Toulouse to nine points and lifted them to seventh place.

Strasbourg vs PSG

One of the standout fixtures of the seventh round will take place at the Stade de la Meinau, where Strasbourg will host Paris Saint-Germain. The teams enter the match having recorded contrasting results in the French championship.

Strasbourg sit 12th with seven points. They have won twice, drawn once and lost three matches. PSG, meanwhile, are sixth with 11 points.

The hosts have made a productive start to the season in attack, scoring 11 goals in six matches. However, defensive problems have prevented them from climbing higher in the standings. Strasbourg have conceded 12 goals, making them one of the league's most vulnerable teams defensively.

They lost 2-1 away to Nice in the previous round. Now, the side coached by Hugo Oliveira will look to bounce back in front of their home supporters. However, their upcoming opponents have a squad that, in terms of individual quality, stands out from most of the teams Strasbourg have faced so far.

PSG, meanwhile, head into the match on the back of two consecutive victories. In their previous league fixture, Luis Enrique's side defeated Le Mans 3-1. Lucas Beraldo, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Maghnes Akliouche scored in that match.

The Parisian club's result in the UEFA Champions League was even more impressive. Earlier this week, PSG beat Manchester City 4-2 away from home. Désiré Doué, Ousmane Dembélé, Vitinha and Akliouche found the net. The visitors had already established a three-goal lead by the 32nd minute.

However, a congested schedule could present an additional challenge for PSG. The Parisians are set to play their second demanding match in four days. They will also host Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League on October 20.

It is no coincidence that Luis Enrique focused on player recovery during his pre-match press conference. The Spanish coach said that playing every three days requires careful management of the players' physical workload and did not rule out squad rotation.

According to the coach, Strasbourg have a young and talented squad and will be particularly motivated when facing the reigning champions. Enrique stressed that PSG's main objective is to extend their winning run and return to the top three in Ligue 1.

Lorient vs Monaco

Another intriguing fixture will take place on Sunday at the Stade du Moustoir, where league leaders Monaco will visit Lorient.

Monaco sit first with 14 points, while the hosts are ninth with eight. Both teams have enjoyed positive results recently, although their objectives in the standings differ.

Under head coach Filipe Luís, Monaco remain the only unbeaten team in the league. The Principality club have won four and drawn two of their six matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding five.

Nevertheless, Monaco unexpectedly dropped points at home against Toulouse in the previous round, drawing 2-2. The hosts went into half-time with a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Edan Diop and Mathys Ablin, but failed to maintain their advantage after the break. Kjetil Haug's side fought back through goals from Kaper Tengstedt and Sion Oppong.

The draw reduced Monaco's lead over their nearest challengers to just one point, making the upcoming match particularly important for the league leaders.

A victory in the UEFA Conference League could also provide Filipe Luís's side with additional motivation. On Thursday, Monaco won their opening match in the competition's main phase, beating CSKA Sofia 2-1 in Bulgaria.

The main figure in the match was 20-year-old German forward Paris Brunner. He opened the scoring in the third minute and later provided the assist for Ansu Fati's goal before half-time. Brunner's strike was his seventh across all competitions this season.

However, the congested schedule could affect the visitors' physical condition. Monaco will be playing their second away match in four days.

Lorient are also preparing for the fixture in positive spirits. In the previous round, they defeated Paris FC 1-0 at home, handing the capital club their first defeat of the league campaign. Gabin Bernardeau scored the decisive goal in the 68th minute.

The victory took Lorient to eight points and helped them consolidate their position in the middle of the table. The team have also looked relatively solid defensively, conceding just six goals in six matches.

Last season's results add further intrigue to the upcoming encounter. Lorient defeated Monaco 3-1 both at home and away.

Monaco will therefore be looking not only to protect their lead but also to make amends for last season's setbacks against Lorient. For the hosts, another victory over one of the league's leading sides would provide an opportunity to close the gap on the teams competing for European qualification.

Paris FC vs Rennes

Another notable fixture of the round will take place at the Stade Jean-Bouin, where Paris FC will host Rennes. With both teams competing near the top of the table, a closely contested match is expected.

Rennes are third with 13 points, while Paris FC sit fifth with 11. A home victory would allow Paris FC to overtake their opponents and improve their position in the standings.

Paris FC made a confident start to the campaign and remained unbeaten through their first five matches. However, they lost 1-0 to Lorient in the previous round, suffering their first defeat of the season.

Despite that setback, the capital club have demonstrated a balanced style of play. They have scored eight goals and conceded just four in six matches, making them one of the league's strongest defensive teams.

One of Paris FC's key strengths is their ability to transition quickly from defence to attack. They have recorded 12 shots following counterattacks so far. Interestingly, Rennes lead the league in this category with 15.

The Breton side, meanwhile, arrive in excellent form. Under Franck Haise, Rennes have won four of their last five league matches. They thrashed Auxerre 4-1 in the previous round.

Rennes have also enjoyed success in Europe. On Thursday, the French club defeated Greek side OFI Crete 2-1 in the UEFA Europa League. After trailing at half-time, Rennes turned the match around in the second half. Mahamadou Nagida equalised in the 76th minute before Abdelhamid Aït Boudlal scored the winner in the 90th.

Nevertheless, the additional European fixture could work in the hosts' favour, as Paris FC have had more time to prepare for the encounter.

Rennes' attacking output is also worth noting. They have scored 12 goals in six Ligue 1 matches, placing them among the most productive teams in the competition. Estéban Lepaul has been particularly influential, scoring four goals.
