Katie Ledecky won her seventh world title in the 800m freestyle at the World Championships in Singapore, clocking 8:05.62 to edge out Australia’s Lani Pallister and Canada’s Summer McIntosh. The win marked Ledecky’s 23rd world title, keeping her on track to match Michael Phelps’ all-time record of 26.
Idman.biz, citing Reuters, reports that Pallister impressed with a personal best of 8:05.98 for silver, while 18-year-old McIntosh, chasing five individual golds, settled for bronze in 8:07.29. “They pushed me all the way,” said Ledecky. “I’m just proud to still be competing with the best.”
McIntosh, who ended Ledecky’s 13-year unbeaten streak earlier this year, called the race a learning experience ahead of her final event, the 400m individual medley.
The race was billed as a Ledecky-McIntosh showdown, but Pallister’s breakout swim added drama, shaving five seconds off her best. “I knew I had a sub-8:10 in me,” said the Aussie.
