Gullu Aghalarzade, the artistic gymnast of the Azerbaijan national team who took the 5th place in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games, said it to journalists at the welcome ceremony at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, Idman.biz reports.
The athlete, who made his debut in the competition, said that they fought until the end: it is Azerbaijan's honor to be in the Top-5. All the people of Azerbaijan have contributed to this result. We were very happy with the sharing of the President of the Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation, Mehriban Aliyeva. We are very lucky that she always supports us and it means a lot to us. We are glad that we represented Azerbaijan at the Olympics."
According to her, she and her teammates can already understand each other in the blink of an eye: "We always feel each other. This is the important point. All these factors helped us in the moment of composition. The Olympics is a competition full of big surprises. The thing that surprised us here was the poor performance of the leaders."
Zeyneb Hummatova, another rhythmic gymnast of the team, emphasized that everything takes time: "With the result we have already shown our strength to the world. If this team continues, if we work harder in training, we can bring a historic medal to Azerbaijan at the next Olympics. Our main goal is to perform our own compositions. We love that we performed as we wanted in the final. It's not long until the next Olympics. Time will tell what will happen in these years."
