Results leave little room for optimism for U19 and U17 teams

In the qualifying rounds for the UEFA U19 European Championship, only the top two teams from each of the 13 groups, along with the best third-placed team, will advance to the elite stage, where Portugal, with the highest ranking, will join.

According to Idman.biz, Azerbaijan's U19 team, competing in Group 7 in Moldova, starts its campaign today with a match against Iceland.

A positive result would boost their chances of moving to the next round.

Within the group, Ireland is ranked 8th, Iceland 20th, Azerbaijan 40th, and Moldova 45th in UEFA’s U-19 rankings. Despite previous group stage struggles, head coach Elkhan Abdullayev remains hopeful. However, recent friendly match outcomes suggest a tough road ahead, with notable losses against Turkiye (0-5), the Netherlands (0-3), Wales (0-3), and Belarus (1-6), along with draws against Moldova and Belarus.

For the UEFA U17 European Championship, the top two teams in each of the 14 groups will advance to the next stage for a chance at the final tournament.

Competing in Group 6 in Romania, Azerbaijan’s U17 team begins its journey today with a match against Hungary, the group favorite. Ranked 13th, Hungary leads the group, followed by Greece (25th), Romania (32nd), and Azerbaijan (45th). Azerbaijan’s U-17 squad, under head coach Ilham Yadullayev, has shown mixed results in recent friendlies, including a loss (0-4) and a draw (0-0) against Turkiye in September.
