Azerbaijani European champion: “I remember about the war, so I could not lose to Armenia”

The Azerbaijani national team, which successfully represented our country in the European School Boxing Championship in Maribor, Slovenia, returned to the homeland.

According to the information provided by the Federation to İdman.biz, the delegation was welcomed by the staff of the Boxing Federation, representatives of the sports community, boxers and family members of athletes at the Heydar Aliyev International Airport.

The head coach of the boys team, Vugar Mammadov, said that it is a pleasure to return from the competition in which 32 countries participated with 4 medals: "We were well prepared for the competition. We had phased training camps. The hard work paid off. Our boxers showed their strength and won a confident victory. The perspective of our team for this age group is high. I believe that the team that takes the 4th place in the European Championship will win more medals in the next years and will be ranked higher."

Shahin Aslanov, who won the title of European champion in 52 kg weight, said that greater successes are ahead. According to him, his goal is to repeat the same success in the next international competitions: "I beat my Ukrainian opponent 5:0 at the start. Then I met an English boxer. He was almost the strongest competitor in my weight class. But it was not insurmountable for me. I defeated a Georgian boxer and a Bulgarian athlete in the final. I am happy to be European champion. My victory will not end there, I will work harder for the sequel."

Our other European champion Saftar Mammadzade (90 kg) is not going to be satisfied with his first success either. The boxer, who won over his Armenian rival in the semi-finals, emphasized that he was responsible for this: "I went to the European Championship in a very good shape. I suffered in training. I was waiting for the European championship for that. I also knew that there was an Armenian boxer in my weight class. Knocking him out in the semi-finals is a great honor for me. I dedicate this victory to the martyrs of the Patriotic War. When I went to battle, the 44-day war came to my mind. That’s why I couldn’t lose. I would like to thank the coaches who helped me. My next main goal is the next world championship. I want to sing the Azerbaijani national anthem at the World Cup."

It should be noted that In the European Championship, where 380 boxers participated, Shahin Aslanov (52 kg), Saftar Mammadzade (90 kg), Adil Zalov (63 kg) and Ismayil Valiyev (70 kg) won bronze medals.
