Azerbaijani boxer Banuchichek Nasirli has made national women's boxing history by becoming the country's first female fighter to win medals at two U19 European Championships.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Nasirli, competing in the 48kg category at the ongoing European Championships in Loznica, Serbia, defeated Poland's Katarzyna Gornisiewicz 3-2 in the quarterfinals. By advancing to the semifinals, she has guaranteed herself at least a bronze medal.
This is already Nasirli's second medal at the U19 continental championships. In October 2025, she reached the final of the European Championships in Ostrava, Czech Republic, and claimed silver in the 48kg category.
That tournament was itself a historic one for Azerbaijani women's boxing. For the first time, female representatives of the country won medals at the U19 European Championships. In addition to Nasirli's silver, Ilkana Ahmadova claimed bronze in the over-80kg category.
By securing another medal at this year's championships in Loznica, Nasirli has now become the first Azerbaijani female boxer to reach the podium at two U19 European Championships.
Remarkably, this is not Nasirli's first historic achievement at youth level. In 2022, competing in the 44kg category, she won bronze at the European Schoolgirls Championships, becoming the first Azerbaijani female boxer to claim a medal at the tournament.
Nasirli will now have the opportunity to improve on her guaranteed bronze in Loznica. She will face Ireland's Ellen Joyce in the semifinals on August 20. Victory would send the Azerbaijani boxer into the U19 European final for the second consecutive year.
