Azerbaijan's national boxing team has achieved a historic result at the European Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing the Azerbaijan Boxing Federation, the country's men's team set a national record for both the number and quality of medals won at the European Championships, finishing second in the overall team standings.
The team, coached by Ravshan Khojayev, achieved the historic result with two gold, one silver and two bronze medals.
Russia topped the men's standings with five gold and two silver medals, while Ukraine finished third with one gold, one silver and one bronze. Azerbaijan's boxers handed the Russian team both of its defeats in the finals.
Azerbaijan also finished third in the combined men's and women's team standings and received a special trophy. Russia ranked first with seven gold, five silver and three bronze medals, while Türkiye was second with four gold, one silver and five bronze.
Saidjamshid Jafarov, who became European champion, was also named the best boxer of the tournament.
Azerbaijan won five medals at the championships, which brought together 406 athletes from 43 countries. Subhan Mamedov (50 kg) and Saidjamshid Jafarov (75 kg) claimed gold medals, Nabi Isgandarov (70 kg) took silver, while Amin Mammadzada (55 kg) and Mahammad Abdullayev (+90 kg) earned bronze.
