Derby at the top: Can Neftchi end Qarabag's remarkable home clean-sheet streak? - İDMAN.BİZ REVIEW

Azerbaijani football's biggest rivalry takes center stage today, October 17, as Qarabag host Neftchi in the eighth round of the Misli Premier League. The highly anticipated encounter will take place at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 19:00 Baku time.

As reported by İdman.Biz, the upcoming derby promises to be one of the most intriguing meetings between the two clubs in recent years. While Qarabag entered previous encounters against their traditional rivals as overwhelming favorites, the balance of power now appears considerably different. Neftchi have significantly improved their performances and currently lead the standings thanks to their impressive attacking record.

Ahead of Matchday 8, three teams are level on 16 points. Neftchi occupy first place with five wins, one draw and one defeat, boasting a goal difference of 18:5. Defending champions Sabah sit second with a goal difference of 14:1, while Qarabag are third with 11 goals scored and four conceded.

However, both chasing teams have played one match fewer than Neftchi and remain unbeaten.

The derby therefore carries significance not only because of the clubs' historic rivalry but also in the battle for the top positions in the championship. Moreover, Qarabag face another crucial fixture shortly afterward, with a meeting against Sabah scheduled for October 25.

Today's encounter will be the 103rd meeting between Qarabag and Neftchi in the Azerbaijani championship.

According to Professional Football League statistics, Qarabag have won 47 of their previous 102 league encounters, while Neftchi have recorded 24 victories. Another 31 matches ended in draws. The Aghdam club also hold a commanding advantage in goals scored, leading 148:87.

The first meeting between the teams took place on September 26, 1992, and ended in a 1-1 draw. Since then, the fixture has developed into one of the fiercest rivalries in Azerbaijani football.

Qarabag's dominance has been particularly evident in recent years.

The Aghdam side have scored against Neftchi in 19 consecutive league matches. Furthermore, Qarabag have won their last five home league encounters against the Baku club without conceding a single goal.

Those five victories came by scores of 2-0, 5-0, 4-0, 3-0 and 2-0, giving Qarabag an impressive aggregate advantage of 16-0.

However, their overall winning streak against Neftchi came to an end earlier this year.

On April 30, Neftchi defeated Qarabag 2-1, with Bassala Sambou scoring the decisive goal in the second minute of stoppage time. It was the Baku club's first victory over their rivals in almost five years.

Remarkably, just four days earlier, Qarabag had demolished Neftchi 5-1. The contrasting results demonstrated just how unpredictable this rivalry can be.

Unlike in previous seasons, Qarabag do not appear to be clear favorites heading into the latest encounter.

Neftchi's current form represents their biggest advantage. Under Ukrainian coach Yuriy Vernydub, the Baku club possess the most productive attack in the championship, having scored 18 goals in seven matches.

Brazilian forward Breno Almeida leads the league's scoring charts with seven goals and will be one of the main threats to Qarabag's defense.

Following a 1-0 defeat to Zira, Neftchi recorded consecutive victories over Shafa (4-1), Imishli (3-2) and Gabala (3-0). They subsequently held defending champions Sabah to a goalless draw.

As a result, Vernydub's team enter the derby on a four-match unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Qarabag have also demonstrated impressive consistency.

Gurban Gurbanov's side have won five of their six league matches this season and defeated Imishli 2-0 in their previous outing.

However, they now face an opponent capable not only of scoring regularly but also of taking points from the country's strongest teams.

The hosts will also have to cope with several important absences.

According to information provided to İdman.Biz by Qarabag's press service, Diego Rosa, Elvin Jafarguliyev and Ismael Toafek will all miss the match due to injuries.

The absence of three players could complicate Gurbanov's preparations, particularly against the league's most prolific attacking side.

Expert opinions have added further intrigue to the encounter.

Former Neftchi head coach Samir Abasov believes the days when Qarabag were overwhelming favorites in such matches are over.

In his view, the current Neftchi squad possess sufficient quality to defeat Qarabag, making the rivalry significantly more competitive than in previous seasons.

Today's derby will therefore represent a major test of both teams' ambitions.

Qarabag will be aiming for a sixth consecutive home victory over their traditional rivals while extending their remarkable clean-sheet streak in these fixtures.

Neftchi, meanwhile, will be determined to demonstrate that their position at the top of the standings is no coincidence and that their April victory over Qarabag was not an isolated success.

In previous years, the main question before this derby was often how convincingly Qarabag would win.

This time, the situation is different: will the Aghdam club reaffirm their dominance, or can an increasingly confident Neftchi change the balance of power in Azerbaijani football?
