The U17 European Wrestling Championship has officially kicked off today in Skopje, the capital of North Macedonia.
Greco-Roman wrestlers have taken to the mat on Day 1 of the tournament, which will run until June 15, Idman.biz reports.
Out of the five Azerbaijani athletes competing today, three have successfully secured a place in the semifinals.

Gurban Majnunov defeated Hungary’s Gergo Zatko (11:2) and Turkiye’s Baris Soylu (6:1) to reach the semifinals. He will face Armenia’s Martin Manjikyan in his next bout.

Aykhan Asadli overcame Belarus’ Aleksandr Belyakov with a 6:3 score but was pinned in the quarterfinals by Russia’s Danil Lozhkin.
65 kg
Ramil Musayev advanced to the round of 16 with a pin against Italy’s Alessio Aranchio but was then defeated 3:5 by Belarus’ Vladislav Salavyov.
80 kg
Nijat Yeylaqaliyev delivered a dominant performance with victories over Czechia’s Jachim Jaburek (8:0), Greece’s Stefanos Vasdekis (6:1), and Georgia’s Giorgi Ormotsadze (9:0). In the semifinal, he will take on Lithuania’s Benediktas Bubelevicius.

Rihad Ibrahimli claimed victories against Belarus’ Matvey Silish (5:1) and Poland’s Mateusz Tomelka (11:2) to secure his spot in the semifinals. He will face Ukraine’s Anatolii Novachenko for a place in the final.
The semifinal matches are scheduled to begin at 20:00 Baku time.
First-class referee Vugar Shukurov is officiating at the European Championship.
