Wimbledon organizers have blamed a “malfunction” in the tournament’s new electronic line-calling system for a confusing moment during Tuesday’s quarterfinal between Taylor Fritz and Karen Khachanov. The system called a "fault" mid-point while a ball boy was still on court, forcing a replay after umpire intervention.
Idman.biz, citing CNN, reports that the All England Club said the system didn’t detect the point’s start due to the ball boy’s presence, prompting Chair Umpire Louise Azemar-Engzell to order a replay.
This follows another incident during Sunday’s match between Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and Sonay Kartal, when the system failed to call three out balls, one of which caused Pavlyuchenkova to stop playing. Organizers later cited “human error” and made adjustments.
The switch to electronic calls marks a major change for Wimbledon, which had long relied on human line judges. While the system is standard at most major tournaments, player reactions have been mixed, Emma Raducanu notably called it “dodgy.”
