Enzo Fernandez rises to third in football's all-time transfer spending list

Manchester City midfielder Enzo Fernandez has climbed to third place on the list of footballers whose transfers have generated the highest combined fees in history.

İdman.Biz reports, citing Spanish newspaper AS, that Manchester City signed the Argentine midfielder from Chelsea for €145 million (AZN 287 million) during the summer transfer window. The move has taken the total amount spent on Fernandez's transfers throughout his career to €310 million (AZN 614 million).

Only Neymar and Romelu Lukaku are ahead of the Argentine in this ranking. Clubs have spent a combined €400 million (AZN 792 million) on Neymar's transfers, while Lukaku's moves have generated €375 million (AZN 742.5 million).

According to AS, Fernandez had initially hoped to join Real Madrid at the beginning of the summer transfer window. However, the Spanish club indicated that it was not interested in signing him, after which Manchester City emerged as the leading option.

The report also highlights Fernandez's close relationship with Enzo Maresca during their time at Chelsea. The midfielder publicly supported the Italian coach during his disagreements with the club's management, and the pair have now been reunited at Manchester City.

Fernandez previously joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 in a then-British-record transfer. His latest move further increases the total investment made in the World Cup-winning midfielder, placing him among the most expensive players in football history when cumulative transfer fees are considered.
