First upset and first thrashing: Argentina stunned as FIFA U-15 World Cup kicks off in Baku

The inaugural FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival has kicked off in Baku, with the opening matches already producing unexpected results and convincing victories.

As reported by İdman.Biz, the biggest surprise of the morning session came when Argentina suffered a shock 1-0 defeat to Algeria. The South American side dominated possession and created more attacking opportunities but failed to capitalize on their advantage.

Algeria scored the only goal midway through the second half to secure a sensational victory over one of the traditional powerhouses of world football.

Indonesia recorded one of the tournament's first emphatic victories, thrashing Fiji 7-1. Diki Marani and Muhammad Hariri Maulana each scored twice for the winners.

Spain also endured a challenging start to their campaign. The European side fell behind twice against Chile but managed to turn the match around and claim an impressive 4-2 comeback victory.

Other results from the opening session included India's 4-2 win over Laos and Malawi's narrow 3-2 victory against Chinese Taipei. Meanwhile, Wales and Bangladesh played out a goalless draw.

The FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival is taking place in Baku from October 24 to 30, bringing together 189 national teams. Matches are played in an eight-a-side format, with two 20-minute halves.

Azerbaijan will begin their campaign today at 19:30 Baku time against Timor-Leste at Baku Crystal Hall. The encounter will serve as the official opening match of the World Cup.

The tournament's opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 19:00 at the same venue.
