Premier League: Manchester City face Birmingham test as Liverpool host surprise contenders

The battle for the top spot in the English Premier League is intensifying as Matchweek 8 takes place this weekend.

As reported by İdman.Biz, Manchester City lead the standings with a perfect 21 points from seven matches. Arsenal are their closest challengers, three points behind, while Brighton sit third with 16 points. Chelsea occupy fourth place with 13 points, followed by Liverpool on 12.

The situation at the bottom of the table is equally tense. Manchester United are only 13th with seven points, while Tottenham, who secured their first league victory of the season in the previous round, sit 16th. Coventry, Fulham and Sunderland occupy the bottom three positions with six, five and four points, respectively.

Matchweek 8 began on October 23 with a 1-1 draw between Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest. Julio Enciso cancelled out Neco Williams' opener, allowing Ipswich to move into ninth place with 10 points, while Forest climbed out of the relegation zone with six.

Aston Villa vs. Manchester City

Saturday's standout fixture takes place at Villa Park, where Unai Emery's Aston Villa will attempt to halt Manchester City's perfect start to the Premier League season.

Under Enzo Maresca, City have won all seven league matches, scoring 19 goals and conceding seven. They narrowly defeated Ipswich 3-2 in the previous round before thrashing Greek side AEK 5-1 in the Champions League in midweek, with Phil Foden scoring a hat-trick.

Ahead of the trip to Birmingham, Maresca confirmed that Erling Haaland is available after missing the AEK match. The Norwegian striker has already scored eight Premier League goals this season.

However, the availability of Mateo Kovacic, Matheus Nunes and Nico O'Reilly remained uncertain ahead of the fixture, while Antoine Semenyo is expected to be sidelined for approximately eight weeks with a knee injury.

Aston Villa are 12th with eight points, although their league position does not fully reflect their recent form. Emery's side are unbeaten in six matches across all competitions, winning five of them.

Villa defeated Newcastle 1-0 away from home in the previous league round before beating Norwegian side Viking 3-1 on Wednesday, extending their winning streak in the Champions League to three matches.

Nevertheless, injuries could complicate the hosts' preparations. Amadou Onana, Matteo Ruggeri and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are unavailable, while Johan Manzambi's fitness will be assessed shortly before kick-off.

The head-to-head record adds further intrigue. Aston Villa have won four of their last six Premier League meetings with Manchester City. Moreover, Haaland has scored just once in his previous five appearances against the Birmingham club.

The league leaders therefore face a serious test of both their title credentials and their ability to overcome an opponent who has frequently caused them problems.

Liverpool vs. Brighton

Another major encounter is scheduled for Sunday, when fifth-placed Liverpool, with 12 points, host Brighton, who have unexpectedly established themselves among the Premier League's top three.

Fabian Hürzeler's side have been one of the revelations of the opening weeks. Brighton have scored 23 goals in seven matches, more than any other Premier League team, while conceding just five. The Seagulls have also kept clean sheets in their last four league fixtures.

In the previous round, Brighton demolished Crystal Palace 5-0, underlining their impressive attacking form. However, their winning run across all competitions ended on Thursday following a goalless away draw against Czech side Jablonec in the Conference League.

Ahead of the trip to Anfield, Hürzeler revealed that Yankuba Minteh and Mats Wieffer are close to returning, although their availability remains uncertain. Pascal Struijk is also a doubt.

Liverpool, meanwhile, are gradually finding their rhythm under Andoni Iraola. The Reds defeated Brentford 2-1 away from home in the previous league round before producing a remarkable comeback against Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, recovering from a 2-0 deficit to win 4-3.

Alexander Isak, who has scored five Premier League goals, remains a key attacking threat, while Florian Wirtz has created 20 chances, the highest total in the competition.

However, Liverpool are dealing with several significant absences. Dominik Szoboszlai, Jeremie Frimpong, Conor Bradley, Hugo Ekitike and Giovanni Leoni are unavailable through injury. Victor Munoz remains doubtful, while Bradley Barcola has recovered and is ready to feature.

Interestingly, Iraola has yet to record a home league victory as Liverpool manager. The meeting with Brighton offers an opportunity to end that run, although the visitors' excellent form and attacking efficiency make them particularly dangerous opponents.
