"The Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games were the most difficult in history."
It was said by Pedro Roque, the head coach of the Azerbaijani national team of male boxers, Idman.biz reports.
An experienced Cuban specialist assessed the chances of Azerbaijan national team at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. He said that the boxers who fought in 13 weights in the world championship entered the ring in the most spectacular competition of the quadrennial with only 7 weights: "For this reason, some athletes had to either reduce or increase their weight. Our Olympic medalist Alfonso Dominguez competed at 86 kg in the cycle. On the eve of Paris 2024, he started fighting at 92 kg and got a license and went to the competition. As for his performance at the Olympics, he fought against a strong Uzbek boxer in the final. Which he had lowered his weight. At this weight, this step was taken as there were athletes like Bakhodir Jalolov. Alfonso entered the ring only 88 kg. Weight is also decisive in the fight of strong boxers. I'm not making excuses or saying that's why we didn't win gold. The opponent was very strong and deserved the championship. We won a silver medal."
Roque said that he was happy for the second time under his leadership the Azerbaijani boxer reached the finals at the Olympics: "Alfonso won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. I think he will turn it into gold in Los Angeles."
In Rio 2016, Lorenso Sotomayor advanced to the finals and finished the competition with a silver medal. Azerbaijani boxer Alfonso Dominguez repeated the same success in Paris 2024.
