The Azerbaijani judokas fought for medals in two weights. Rashid Mammadaliyev (73 kg) lost in the final and became second.
Men's
73 kg
Rashid Mammadaliyev faced Austrian Samuel Gasner in the first round and won. He then advanced to the semi-finals by defeating Masayuki Tereda (Thailand), Akil Gjakova (Kosovo) and Vinicius Ardina (Brazil), respectively. Mammadaliyev was stronger than Hassan Doukkali (Morocco) on the way to the final. The Azerbaijani judoka wrestled with Adil Osmanov (Moldova) in the decisive match. Rashid lost in the final and won a silver medal in the Grand Prix.
Women's
63 kg
Aytaj Kardashkhanli, who was released from the first round, faced Italian Antonietta Palumbo. She was suffering from the defeat at the start.
It should be noted that the Azerbaijan national team finished the first day without a medal.
