World Championships: Ushangi Kokauri misses out on bronze – VIDEO/UPDATED

The individual competitions at the Judo World Championships, held in Budapest, Hungary, concluded today.

The last representative of the Azerbaijani national team to compete was Ushangi Kokauri, Idman.biz reports.

Ushangi Kokauri (+100 kg) defeated Igor Vracar (Serbia) in the round of 64 and then overcame Andy Granda (Cuba). In the round of 16, he beat Munir Ertug (Turkiye). In his fourth match, Kokauri faced Guram Tushishvili (Georgia) and lost. In the repechage, he eliminated Lukas Krpalek (Czech Republic). He then faced Temur Rakhimov (Tajikistan) in the bronze medal bout. Although Kokauri was leading by waza-ari, he was thrown with an ippon just 8 seconds before the end of the match. As a result, he finished the World Championships in 5th place.

Azerbaijani judokas Zelim Tckaev (81 kg), Eljan Hajiyev (90 kg), and Zelym Kotsoiev (100 kg) have each won bronze medals at the championships. The national team will compete in the mixed team event tomorrow.

The individual events at the World Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary are nearing their conclusion, with Ushangi Kokauri representing Azerbaijan on the final day of competition.

Competing in the +100 kg weight category, Kokauri began his campaign with a win over Igor Vracar (Serbia) in the Round of 64, followed by a victory against Andy Granda (Cuba). In the Round of 16, he overcame Minur Ertug (Turkiye), Idman.biz reports.

Kokauri's fourth bout saw him face Georgian judoka Guram Tushishvili, where he suffered his only defeat. However, the Azerbaijani athlete bounced back in the repechage round, defeating Lukas Krpalek (Czech Republic) to book his place in the bronze medal match. He will wrestle Temur Rakhimov (Tajikistan) for the bronze medal.

So far at the tournament, Azerbaijan has secured three bronze medals, Zelim Tckaev (81 kg), Eljan Hajiyev (90 kg) and Zelym Kotsoiev (100 kg).

The national team will next compete in the Mixed Team Event, scheduled for tomorrow.
