Mahir Emreli’s Kaiserslautern to host Schalke in 2. Bundesliga round 2

Mahir Emreli’s team, Kaiserslautern, will host Schalke today in the 2nd round of the 2. Bundesliga.

The home side started the season with a 0-1 away loss to Hannover, while the visitors began with a 2-1 home win against Hertha, Idman.biz reports.

According to the media, during Wednesday’s open training session, Kaiserslautern fans showed full support for Torsten Lieberknecht’s team. Around 1,000 fans watched the morning training, and the excitement for the first home game of the season was clearly felt.

The head coach is eagerly awaiting the match at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, which holds nearly 50,000 spectators: “With the support of our fans, we can show our attacking potential in a different way.”

The opponent Schalke finished 14th in the 2024/25 2. Bundesliga season, which was the worst result in the club’s history. Schalke’s captain Kenan Karaman has recovered from injury and is expected to play. The 31-year-old forward scored 6 goals in 31 appearances for the Turkish national team between 2017 and 2021 and also played for Besiktas for some time.

Another well-known Schalke player, Amin Younes, was loaned to Kaiserslautern in the 2014/15 season. The 32-year-old midfielder scored 2 goals in 8 appearances for the German national team between 2017 and 2021.

Kaiserslautern has won the last three encounters between the two teams. Overall, the statistics are almost even: Schalke has 34 wins, 33 losses, and 25 draws.

Kaiserslautern is expected to start with the same lineup that played last weekend, which means Azerbaijani national team forward Mahir Emreli will be in the starting eleven and will try to open his goal account for the new season.

The Kaiserslautern vs. Schalke match will kick off at 22:30 Baku time.
