The joint bid by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan to host the 2027 FIFA U-20 World Cup is a very welcome development. This step will give a boost to the development of our football and positively impact our international image.
According to Idman.biz, Vaqif Sadygov, Chairman of the AFFA Coaches Committee, said this in an interview with AZERTAC, commenting on the announcement of Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan's joint candidacy for the 2027 tournament.
He noted that there is much to be done: “We must be ready in terms of infrastructure to organize the tournament at a high level. Naturally, once FIFA views the candidacy positively, our government will implement certain reforms and take all necessary steps. This will take some time. Azerbaijan has already hosted major international events such as the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, the Islamic Solidarity Games, and Euro 2020. So, we already have considerable experience. The stadiums in Baku meet international standards. Most importantly, we must improve the quality of our football and prove that we are worthy of hosting this tournament.”
Sadygov also stressed the importance of renovating regional stadiums if the tournament is held in Azerbaijan: “Of course, there is a possibility that matches will be hosted not only in the capital but also in the regions. For this, we need stadiums that meet modern standards. Holding some of the matches outside Baku would be very beneficial for our football. It would motivate young people in those areas and spread the love of football throughout the country.”
According to him, cooperating with a rapidly developing football nation like Uzbekistan will greatly benefit Azerbaijani football: “This project could provide strategic and structural contributions to our football. Uzbekistan has made significant progress at the national team level, especially in recent years. AFFA can learn from their strategy.”
