Regional first - Qarabag becomes official partner of UN’s Sports for Climate Action initiative

Qarabag FC has become the official partner of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)’s Sports for Climate Action initiative.

The Aghdam-based club has also joined the UN’s Race to Zero campaign by signing on to this initiative, Idman.biz reports.

By aligning with the goals of the Paris Agreement, Qarabag has pledged its support for transitioning to net-zero carbon emissions in the sports sector.

Club president Tahir Gozel described the move as both an honor and a responsibility:

“Joining such a prestigious initiative brings international recognition and adds to our responsibility. Sports communities hold influential power, and we are ready to use that power to protect the environment. It’s a source of joy and pride to be part of this. For years, our club has carried the Qarabag name with dignity in Europe, and our consistent performance and initiatives have earned international attention. We are committed to representing both our country and the Qarabag name with distinction.”

During the 29th session of the UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) held in Baku, Qarabag took the initiative to form an alliance of football clubs in the fight against climate change. Top clubs from around the world, particularly Europe, including Liverpool, Tottenham (England), Atlético Madrid, Real Betis (Spain), Fenerbahce, Galatasaray (Turkiye), Udinese (Italy), Porto (Portugal), Flamengo (Brazil), and Malmö (Sweden), joined the alliance by signing a declaration of intent.

Qarabag extended its gratitude to the UNFCCC team for recognizing and accepting the club’s commitment and efforts.

The club’s climate strategy was developed in collaboration with Deloitte, which also played a key role in the membership process and communication efforts related to the initiative.

By joining the platform, Qarabag has committed to reducing its carbon emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and reaching net-zero by 2040. Additional commitments include annual public climate reports, a concrete action plan within 12 months, and transparent climate dialogue with stakeholders.
