"Although we lost to Lithuania in the final group match, we won the first two games and secured a spot in the Superfinal."
This statement was made by Sahib Mammadov, head coach of the Azerbaijan national beach soccer team, in an interview with AFFA’s press service, Idman.biz reports.
The coach shared his thoughts on the European Championship First Qualifying Stage (EBSL) matches held in Spain:
“With these results, we accomplished our main task. I would attribute the defeat against Lithuania to fatigue, as we had to put in a lot of effort in the opening match against England. Regardless of the outcome of the Lithuania game, we had already guaranteed our place in the Superfinal. That match only determined the group winner. Our next goal is to reach the final of the European Superfinal in Italy this September and earn promotion to Division A.”
For the record, Azerbaijan’s national team, competing in Group A of Division B, defeated England (5:4) and Belgium (11:2), before narrowly losing to Lithuania (3:4). With 5 points, the team finished second in the group and qualified for the Superfinal, which will take place in Italy from September 7 to 14.
