"Such things sometimes happen in sports."
Rasul Chunayev, a former wrestler of the Azerbaijan national team, told Idman.biz.
He commented on the performance of the Greco-Roman team and the weak result of the women's team at the European Olympic Tournament held in Baku. The World Champion and winner of the European Games said that in the next tournament, our athletes can gather themselves and get a license: "Not every athlete can wrestle at home. Stress, anxiety, etc. such factors have a great influence on them. Therefore, they were not psychologically ready for this tournament. That is why they lost because of their own mistakes. They could not overcome their psychology. But despite everything, they are strong. I believe that they will prove themselves in the upcoming competitions. The main thing is that they don't get discouraged."
He said that he expects a license from each of the freestyle wrestlers who will compete in the European Olympic Qualifying tournament today: "Every athlete wants to go to Paris. I've won an Olympic medal, and I've been through it all. At that moment, the best strategy is psychological preparation. This is the result. We witnessed many surprising moments in the tournament held in Baku. There were wrestlers who even beat our favorites. No one expected this."
Evaluating Mariya Stadnik's (50 kg) semi-final match at the European Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Baku, Chunayev said that we all thought she was the winner: "But the last seconds decided everything. This happened as a result of a momentary gap. I'm very sorry. I am sure that Mariya will correct her mistake in the next tournament, get a license and be awarded the title of champion at the Olympics.
Talking about the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament, which will be held in Istanbul on May 9-12, the veteran wrestler said that this competition will be more difficult: "All wrestlers will come to the final competition with enthusiasm in order to win a license."
It should be noted that there are currently 2 licenses for the Greco-Roman wrestling team of Azerbaijan.
