Brazilian football legend Roberto Carlos has addressed recent claims circulating on social media that he had converted to Islam.
As reported by İdman.Biz, the former Real Madrid and Brazil defender told Saudi Arabian newspaper Okaz that he has great respect for Islam and Muslims but confirmed that he is not a Muslim.
Roberto Carlos also revealed that his wife is Muslim and stressed that he respects her religious beliefs and practices.
"It is very nice to see my wife praying, but the rumours that I have converted to Islam are not true," the 53-year-old former footballer said.
Claims that Roberto Carlos had embraced Islam initially spread across social media before being picked up by a number of media outlets.
The Brazilian is regarded as one of the greatest left-backs in football history. He enjoyed the most successful period of his club career with Real Madrid and won the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil.
