José Mourinho has revealed why he rejected the chance to take charge of Manchester United in 2013, opting instead for a return to Chelsea after leaving Real Madrid. As reported by İdman.Biz, citing Netflix, the Portuguese coach opened up in a documentary.
Mourinho admitted he had even signed a preliminary agreement to succeed Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford following the legendary manager’s departure.
“I was very proud of that offer because Manchester United is an incredibly attractive club,” he said. “But love for football and love for a particular club are different things. I think the second is stronger. After Real Madrid, I needed to feel loved above all else.”
He acknowledged that turning down the opportunity to replace Ferguson was a dramatic moment in his career, but insists he has no regrets.
“It was a decision made with my heart,” Mourinho added.
The Portuguese tactician would later take charge of Manchester United between 2016 and 2018, winning the UEFA Europa League, the League Cup and the Community Shield with the club.
