Argentina Football Association (AFA) president Claudio Tapia has shared his thoughts on the possibility of Lionel Messi bringing his international career to an end.
As İdman.Biz reports, citing foreign media, Tapia said the decision is entirely Messi’s and that the footballer should be given time to make his choice:
“It is purely his personal decision. We have to leave him alone. In 2022, we did not know whether he would play in 2026. He said that we had to take it match by match. I think that at the World Cup we saw one of Leo’s excellent, perhaps even best, versions.
“We have to allow him to continue enjoying football. Then we have to give him the freedom to make the decision he believes is right.”
Tapia also praised Messi’s performance at the 2026 World Cup.
“It was a magnificent World Cup for Leo. We enjoyed it immensely and should be proud of ourselves. I enjoyed every moment of it. Without a doubt, he was the leader of this team at the World Cup. If we analyse his performances, for me, he was the best player. He was breaking records in every match.”
It was previously reported that Messi might not play for the Argentina national team again. However, the Argentine has yet to make any statement regarding his future.
