Former West Ham head coach Harry Redknapp has said he would be ready to return to the club and work without pay if it helped keep the team in the Premier League.
According to Idman.Biz, citing talkSPORT, the 77-year-old specialist stressed that money is not a factor for him and that he still enjoys working with footballers. Redknapp said he would gladly accept such an offer. “I would work for free. If they called me, I would go anywhere and do it without money. I enjoy being around players, I love the job. It’s not about money,” he said.
Speaking about West Ham’s current situation, Redknapp expressed serious doubts about the team’s ability to stay in the league. In his view, the London side do not even look ready for a relegation battle, with the situation close to critical. “Right now they don’t even look like a team capable of fighting for survival. I don’t see where they are going to get out of this situation,” the former manager noted.
Redknapp also criticized the club’s transfer policy while defending current head coach Nuno Espirito Santo, who could reportedly be dismissed if results do not improve. He recalled that before Nuno, the team was unsuccessfully led by Graham Potter, stressing that the problems are systemic. “Managers always get sacked first, but the players remain what they are. You could bring in anyone, even Pep Guardiola, but with this squad the team would not take off. There is a lack of quality, that’s the whole answer,” Redknapp said.
The veteran coach added that the club’s hierarchy made serious mistakes in squad building, which directly affected results. According to him, a manager in such conditions is left with almost no chance to change the situation. “The club has done very poor business in the transfer market. They signed too few genuinely high-quality players, and in the end the manager is left without real tools,” he added.
West Ham are currently in the relegation zone, seven points behind the safety line, with just three wins in the Premier League this season. The club risks returning to the Championship for the first time since 2012.
