World Championships: Zelim Tckaev wins bronze for Azerbaijan – VIDEO

The World Judo Championships in Budapest, Hungary continue with strong representation from Team Azerbaijan.

Zelim Tckaev has advanced to the quarterfinals in the men’s 81 kg category, Idman.biz reports.

Tckaev, who received a bye in the opening round, began his day with a convincing victory over Jiangnan Wang (China) in the round of 32. He followed that up by defeating Luan Almeida (Brazil) in the round of 16 then overcame Yun-Hwan Lee (South Korea) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, Tckaev faced Tato Grigalashvili of Georgia but was defeated. The Azerbaijani judoka bounced back in the bronze medal match, where he battled Nugzari Tatalashvili (UAE). After a tense bout, Tckaev emerged victorious in golden score, securing Azerbaijan’s first medal of the championship.

Azerbaijan has entered 13 athletes (9 men, 4 women) across 10 weight categories at the championships. So far, eight athletes have completed their individual bouts without securing medals.

Team Azerbaijan will also compete in the mixed team event later in the tournament.
