Former opponent of Qarabag faces potential shutdown of professional operations

Ukrainian club Vorskla Poltava, once a UEFA Europa League group stage opponent of Azerbaijan's Qarabag, is facing the possibility of ceasing its professional activities due to serious financial difficulties.

Vorskla, who were recently relegated from the Ukrainian Premier League after 29 years, failed to maintain their top-tier status following a dramatic playoff. Despite winning the first leg against Kudrovka 2–1, they lost the return match 0–1 at home and were defeated 3–4 in the penalty shootout, Idman.biz reports.

Once a prominent force in Ukrainian football, Vorskla claimed bronze in the national league twice (1997, 2018) and lifted the Ukrainian Cup in 2009. They also featured in the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League group stage, facing Qarabag (with a 1–0 win in Poltava and a 0–1 loss in Baku).

According to Ukrainian journalist Volodymyr Zverov, the club's management is now considering halting operations at the professional level due to mounting financial pressures. A mass sale of players is expected, which may temporarily ease the situation.

Vorskla was recently hit with a third transfer ban, further complicating their future.
