During the first matches of the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League, Sabah conceded a goal near the end while defending against Levski in Bulgaria, losing 0-1.
Idman.biz reports that former Azerbaijan national team coach Mahmud Gurbanov shared his thoughts with Report news agency.
The specialist noted that due to the opponent's pressure, the Baku club conceded a goal in the final minutes: "Despite the minimal defeat, Sabah left a good impression. They played well both defensively and offensively against a strong opponent. They fought hard and did not give the opponent much space. There was great effort and quality play. In both halves, they managed shots on goal and launched fast attacks. Mickels had a chance to score in the second half. The team played without mistakes. However, as the added time progressed and the opponent increased pressure, gaps appeared in the defense. The opponent sent many crosses towards Sabah’s penalty area. Also, defenders lost track of opposing players. In several moments, goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov saved the team from conceding. I think yesterday’s best player was Sabah’s goalkeeper. They just conceded a goal in the last moments. I believe they have a chance to advance in the next match in Baku."
He emphasized that Levski is a strong team: "Teams renew every year, and football is getting faster. Every game has its own story. So, it’s not right to compare with the past. Generations and coaches change. Football is faster now. But what is clear is that Levski is a strong team. I would especially note their captain. The left-footed player on the right wing was also dangerous."
Gurbanov thinks the conceded goal was not due to fatigue: "The gaps in the team appeared only after the 90th minute. I wouldn’t say it was because of fatigue. Simply, near the end of the game, Sabah’s players lost concentration. The opponent was applying strong pressure. But until that moment, they hadn’t made any serious defensive mistakes."
The return match between the teams will take place on August 14 at Bank Respublika Arena in Masazir at 20:00.
