UEFA reveals record-breaking impact of substitutes in Champions League

The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has published an analytical report highlighting the growing influence of substitutions on match results in the Champions League.

As reported by İdman.Biz, citing UEFA's official website, substitutes scored 18 goals and provided 19 assists during Matchday 2 of the league phase. The goals tally equalled the competition's single-matchday record, while the number of assists set a new benchmark.

A total of 78 goals were scored across the second round of fixtures, marking a new record in Champions League history. Players coming off the bench accounted for 23% of those goals, compared with 16% last season.

The impact of substitutions was particularly evident in Real Madrid's dramatic 4-3 victory over Roma. Carlos Espí and Endrick both found the net after coming on as substitutes, while Arda Güler contributed two assists.

Remarkably, all five Spanish clubs secured victories with the help of goals scored by substitutes, underlining the importance of squad depth and tactical adjustments.

Another notable example came in Arsenal's convincing 3-0 victory over Lille. Bukayo Saka, introduced during the match, first provided an assist for Eberechi Eze before getting on the scoresheet himself.

Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær, who now works as a UEFA technical observer, explained that well-timed substitutions can help teams exploit their opponents' weaknesses, particularly when fatigue begins to affect players.

According to UEFA's technical experts, the growing influence of substitutes reflects an important tactical trend in modern football. With managers able to introduce fresh players at crucial moments, squad depth and effective in-game decision-making are becoming increasingly decisive factors in the Champions League.
