Borussia Dortmund are heading into their UEFA Champions League encounter against Azerbaijan's Sabah under difficult circumstances, having failed to win their last three competitive matches while facing a demanding schedule that leaves little time for proper preparation.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing German media, Dortmund sporting director Ole Buk admitted that the upcoming match in Baku would require not only physical strength but also mental resilience from the players.
"In Azerbaijan, everything will also depend on willpower," Buk said.
He stressed that the team must demonstrate its ability to learn from recent setbacks and respond to adversity.
Dortmund have gone three consecutive matches without a victory. Niko Kovac's side drew 2-2 with Werder Bremen, suffered a 1-0 defeat against Norwegian club Bodo/Glimt and played out a goalless draw with Union Berlin.
Defender Waldemar Anton also addressed the team's disappointing run, describing the current situation as a challenge that Dortmund must overcome.
The congested fixture schedule has added further complications. The German club will play its third away match in just seven days. Following trips to Norway and Berlin, the squad now faces a lengthy journey to the Azerbaijani capital.
According to club official Lars Ricken, the technical specifications of the aircraft could require an intermediate stop during the flight to Azerbaijan. Nevertheless, he emphasized that fatigue and travel difficulties should not become excuses for the team.
There are also concerns over player availability. Greek footballer Konstantinos Karetsas sustained an ankle injury during the match against Union Berlin, leaving his participation in the upcoming fixture uncertain.
Meanwhile, Sabah are expected to provide a serious test for the visitors. The Azerbaijani club have won all five of their home matches in this season's Champions League, including an impressive 2-0 victory over Slavia Prague in the second round of the league phase.
The Champions League clash between Sabah and Borussia Dortmund will take place in Baku on October 20, with kick-off scheduled for 20:45 local time.
