Former Roma captain Francesco Totti has admitted that he occasionally wondered what might have happened had he accepted an offer from Real Madrid, but insists he has no regrets about remaining loyal to his boyhood club.
As reported by İdman.Biz, citing Corriere della Sera, the Italian football legend reflected on his decision to reject the Spanish giants in 2004, when Madrid's star-studded "Galacticos" squad featured some of the world's biggest names.
"Do I regret turning down Real Madrid? In 2004, the Galacticos, as they were rightly called, had David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane. I could have won everything, perhaps even the Ballon d'Or. But in the end, everything turned out well without it. Back then, we made the decision with our hearts, and we were all on the same page," Totti said.
The former Italy international spent his entire professional career at Roma, becoming one of the most iconic one-club players in football history.
During his time with the Giallorossi, Totti won the Serie A title in 2001, two Coppa Italia trophies and two Italian Super Cups. He also played a key role in Italy's triumph at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Totti retired from professional football in 2017 after making 786 appearances and scoring 307 goals for Roma across all competitions.
The legendary forward celebrated his 50th birthday in September 2026, remaining a symbol of loyalty in modern football.
