Lionel Messi has been handed a one-game suspension by Major League Soccer after missing the MLS All-Star Game without prior league approval. Despite not being injured, Messi and teammate Jordi Alba did not play in Wednesday’s exhibition match, leading to their ineligibility for Inter Miami’s next fixture against FC Cincinnati on Saturday.
Idman.biz, citing BBC, reports that MLS rules state that absence from the All-Star Game without clearance results in automatic suspension. League Commissioner Don Garber acknowledged Messi’s contributions to MLS but said the longstanding policy had to be enforced.
Inter Miami owner Jorge Mas criticized the rule, calling it “draconian,” and said both players were “extremely upset.” He defended the decision, saying rest was necessary during a packed schedule.
Messi, the league’s top attraction with 18 goals this season, will now miss a key match against conference leaders Cincinnati. MLS has said it will review the All-Star participation policy going forward.
