LaLiga’s use of VAR (Video Assistant Referee) reached record levels last season — but not every team saw the same benefits.
The 2023/24 La Liga season set a new record for VAR interventions, with referees changing their decisions 189 times, surpassing the previous season’s total of 179, Idman.biz reports.
However, data published by AS reveals a clear imbalance in how these decisions affected different teams. Real Madrid and Alavés were the clubs most negatively impacted by VAR, with 16 decisions going against each of them. In contrast, decisions in their favour stood at just 9 for Real Madrid and 8 for Alavés.
On the other end of the spectrum, Barcelona benefited most from VAR interventions — 16 decisions in their favour versus only 7 against.
Real Madrid also topped the list for most goals disallowed via VAR, losing 8 goals, followed by Villarreal with 6. Meanwhile, Las Palmas (6) and Barcelona (5) led in terms of opponent goals being overturned after VAR reviews.
Athletic Bilbao earned the most penalties after VAR reviews (7), followed by Barcelona and Osasuna (5 each), and Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid (4 each).
Interestingly, when it comes to VAR-related red cards shown to opponents, both Real Madrid and Alavés came out ahead, with rivals being sent off four times each following VAR reviews.
As VAR continues to shape the outcomes of top-level matches, its impact remains a topic of heated debate — especially among the LaLiga giants.
