Captain of the Azerbaijan women's national football team, Sevinc Jafarzade, has proudly worn the national jersey for 15 years. The 31-year-old forward has started all three matches in the current UEFA Nations League campaign.
Speaking to AFFA’s press service, the Krasnodar striker emphasized the importance of today's match against Lithuania, Idman.biz reports.
– A crucial match against Lithuania awaits. What are your expectations?
– The only thing we expect is victory. A win is the only result that can take us to League B. We will give everything on the field to secure those three points.
– To finish top of the group, the team will likely need to score as many goals as possible. Could that create added pressure?
– First and foremost, we need to secure the win. Only then can we focus on increasing the goal difference to strengthen our position. I don’t believe this puts extra pressure on us. Our main task is to fight until the final whistle and achieve the result we need. We know it won’t be easy, and that’s why we’re preparing at the highest level.
– How do you evaluate the team’s performance so far in this Nations League campaign?
– I’d say we’ve done very well. Even when we had to play without key players in certain matches, we still managed to deliver positive results. But our work isn’t done. We all fully understand how important the upcoming match is.
– As captain, how do you motivate the team in the locker room?
– Sometimes I don’t save motivation just for the locker room. There are moments when I try to inspire my teammates during training or pre-match meetings. Of course, we also talk in the locker room before matches. We all understand the importance of every game, but I make sure to remind everyone again. I trust all my teammates. Our shared goal is to represent our country with pride.
– Let’s talk a bit about you. How did you get into football, and how long have you been playing?
– I’ve been part of the national team for 15 years. I started by playing with my brother and other boys. Thanks to my brother’s and family’s strong support, I’ve made it to this level.
– You’ve been called up to the national team for many years. Which match stands out the most for you?
– Every match with the national team is special and important to me because I’ve poured my heart and soul into each one. Whether we win or lose, wearing the national jersey always fills me with pride.
– Do you remember your debut match?
– Of course! It was in 2010 when I was 16 years old. I played against Wales as part of the starting lineup.
– What’s the most important goal you’ve ever scored?
– For me, every goal is important. Each one has its own meaning and beauty. Every assist and every goal holds a special place in my career.
– Does the team have any pre-match rituals?
– Before matches, we listen to national and patriotic songs. While we don’t have a specific ritual, everyone says a prayer. Giving thanks to God and praying is very meaningful to us.
– What advice would you give to young girls who want to play football?
– Work hard and never listen to negative comments from others. The only people they should listen to are their parents. Education is also very important — never give up on your goals. Be persistent and determined. The road to success is never easy, but the rewards of hard work are always worth it.
