Roman Kerimov from MLS: “If I play for Azerbaijan, my grandfather will jump to the ceiling”

Goalkeeper Roman Kerimov, who plays within the system of MLS club Houston Dynamo, has revealed his desire to represent Azerbaijan national football team, admitting it would mean everything to his family.

Speaking in an interview with İdman.Biz, the 18-year-old goalkeeper shared details of his journey from Moscow to the United States, as well as his growing ambition to play international football.

Kerimov, who has Azerbaijani roots through his grandfather, began his career in the academies of CSKA Moscow and Rodina before moving to Los Angeles at the age of 14. After impressing at LA Surf, he was spotted by Houston Dynamo scouts and eventually joined the club’s system.

Despite initially struggling with the language barrier, Kerimov adapted quickly to life in the US, balancing online education with professional football development. He is currently part of the academy setup, competing for opportunities in a highly competitive environment.

The young goalkeeper admitted that representing Azerbaijan has become a serious goal in recent months, particularly given his personal connection to the country.

“If I had the opportunity, I would accept without hesitation. My family fully supports me. If it happens, my grandfather will jump to the ceiling,” Kerimov said.

He also highlighted his long-term ambition to move to European football, naming it as the ideal environment for growth, while remaining positive about the level and opportunities within MLS.

Kerimov’s story reflects a growing trend of dual-nationality players considering international options, with Azerbaijan potentially benefiting from emerging talents developed abroad.
