Legendary Real Madrid footballer Alfredo Di Stefano entered football history 36 years ago by winning the Super Ballon d’Or, Idman.Biz reports.
France Football awarded Di Stefano the Super Ballon d’Or on December 24, 1989. In the voting, he finished ahead of such global icons as Johan Cruyff and Michel Platini.
Di Stefano was the driving force behind Real Madrid’s era of dominance, leading the club to five consecutive European Cup titles and etching his name into football history while wearing the famous white shirt.
During his playing career, Di Stefano also won the Ballon d’Or twice, in 1957 and 1959.
It should be noted that the Super Ballon d’Or was established only once, in 1989, to mark the 35th anniversary of France Football. Unlike the traditional award, it was designed to honor not a single season, but the greatest player of an entire era, mainly covering the period from the 1950s to the 1980s. Following a vote involving former Ballon d’Or winners, journalists, and football experts, Alfredo Di Stefano was named the recipient, making him the first and so far the only footballer to ever receive the Super Ballon d’Or.
