A bus carrying Flamengo fans on their way to the second leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinal against Racing in Argentina overturned on the BR-116 highway near Barra Mansa, Rio de Janeiro, on Monday afternoon.
Idman.Biz reports that the incident occurred at km 282 around 16:00 after the bus reportedly lost a wheel and went out of control.
According to the Concessions Road Company (CCR), 46 people were injured, with 32 classified as light, 10 moderate, and four in serious condition. The driver is in the most critical state. Two seriously injured victims were treated at the Hospital Municipal Sao Joao Batista in Volta Redonda, and others at the Santa Casa.
Some fans were trapped inside the bus, and reports indicate the driver was thrown from the vehicle during the accident. Minor scuffles also broke out around the scene as some individuals attempted to steal items from inside the overturned bus.
A replacement bus has been sent, and uninjured fans will continue their journey to Argentina. The investigation into the cause of the accident is ongoing, with a final report expected within five days. Flamengo confirmed it is in contact with local authorities and monitoring the situation.
