After a three-week international break, the English Premier League returns with Matchweek 6. The headline fixture will see Liverpool host Manchester City at Anfield, although several other encounters promise plenty of intrigue following an unexpected start to the season.
As reported by İdman.Biz, Manchester City remain the outright Premier League leaders with a perfect 15 points from five matches. Enzo Maresca's side have yet to drop a point and hold a three-point advantage over defending champions Arsenal.
The London club sit second with 12 points but suffered their first defeat of the season before the international break, losing 3–0 to Brighton. That result lifted Brighton into third place with 10 points.
Brentford and Leeds have also emerged as surprise contenders. Both teams have collected nine points without suffering a defeat, occupying fourth and fifth places respectively. Liverpool and Everton, immediately behind them, also have nine points.
Meanwhile, several traditional heavyweights have struggled to find their best form. Chelsea are only tenth with seven points, Manchester United sit 12th with five, while Tottenham unexpectedly occupy the bottom of the table with just two points.
Spurs remain winless, making their upcoming trip to Old Trafford another particularly important encounter of the round.
Arsenal vs. Leeds
The defending English champions will open Matchweek 6 at the Emirates Stadium against one of the biggest surprises of the early season.
Mikel Arteta's side began their title defense with four consecutive victories but suffered a shocking 3–0 defeat to Brighton in their fifth match. Arsenal must now return to winning ways to prevent Manchester City from extending their lead.
The Londoners also face several injury concerns. Christos Tzolis is expected to miss several weeks with a muscle injury, while the availability of Kai Havertz and Ezri Konsa remains uncertain.
Declan Rice, who experienced physical problems following the World Cup, is expected to be available.
Another positive development for Arsenal was the announcement of Arteta's contract extension ahead of the Premier League's return.
However, the hosts should not expect an easy victory.
Under Daniel Farke, Leeds have remained unbeaten in their opening five matches. The Yorkshire club have not enjoyed such a successful start to a top-flight campaign since the 2001/02 season.
Defensive solidity has been one of their greatest strengths. Leeds have conceded just three goals in five matches, while goalkeeper James Trafford boasts one of the league's best shot-saving records.
The team also stands out for its high number of interceptions and ability to disrupt opponents' quick attacking transitions.
Nevertheless, the head-to-head statistics strongly favor Arsenal.
The Londoners have won nine of their last ten Premier League meetings with Leeds, including seven consecutive victories with an aggregate goal difference of 24–5.
Leeds' last league victory over Arsenal dates back to 2003.
Liverpool vs. Manchester City
The biggest match of the round will take place at Anfield, where the Premier League leaders will attempt to extend their perfect start, while Liverpool aim to close the gap at the top.
Manchester City enter the encounter with five victories from five matches and an impressive attacking record.
In their previous fixture, Enzo Maresca's side defeated Sunderland 5–3, while Erling Haaland, with five goals, leads the Premier League scoring charts.
However, City's preparations have been overshadowed by developments away from the pitch.
The club has found itself at the center of a major controversy following an independent commission's decision finding numerous breaches of Premier League financial regulations.
City dispute the findings and have lodged an appeal.
Maresca has publicly expressed confidence in the club's management, emphasizing that off-field developments should not distract his players from their sporting responsibilities.
The visitors also face several selection problems.
Phil Foden will miss the match through suspension, while Nico O'Reilly's fitness remains uncertain after his early return from England international duty.
Haaland, meanwhile, is fully fit despite being substituted as a precaution during Norway's most recent match.
Liverpool occupy sixth place with nine points and remain unbeaten.
However, Andoni Iraola's team have dropped too many points, recording just two victories and three draws in their opening five matches.
The Merseyside club secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Bournemouth in their previous fixture, while the players are gradually adapting to the intense pressing system introduced by their new head coach.
Injuries to two forwards have dealt a serious blow to Iraola's preparations.
Alexander Isak, who has scored four goals in five Premier League appearances, suffered a thigh injury while representing Sweden.
Cody Gakpo also sustained an ankle injury on international duty with the Netherlands.
Both players have been ruled out of the Manchester City clash.
The situation is further complicated by the continued absence of Hugo Ekitike, who is still recovering from injury.
As a result, young Lewis Koumas is Iraola's only available specialist center-forward, although the manager has not ruled out deploying Bradley Barcola in a central attacking role.
Jeremy Jacquet is expected to return to the squad, while Federico Chiesa's availability remains uncertain.
The league standings add further significance to the encounter.
A Liverpool victory would reduce the gap to Manchester City to three points and could represent a major breakthrough in the early stages of Iraola's tenure.
Conversely, a City victory would extend their advantage over Liverpool to nine points.
For the hosts, the match also offers an opportunity to end a disappointing home run.
Liverpool have yet to record a Premier League victory at Anfield this season, and another setback would raise concerns ahead of a demanding schedule in both the domestic championship and the Champions League.
