France captain Kylian Mbappe has been ruled out of Monday’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Iceland due to a right ankle injury sustained during his team’s 3-0 victory over Azerbaijan, the French Football Federation (FFF) announced on Saturday.
Idman.Biz reports that the 26-year-old forward, who has been in outstanding form this season with 14 goals in 10 appearances for Real Madrid, picked up the injury in the 83rd minute of the match after scoring once and providing an assist.
“The national coach Didier Deschamps has confirmed his withdrawal. Kylian Mbappé has been made available to his club and will not be replaced,” the FFF said in an official statement.
France currently lead Group D with a perfect record of nine points from three matches. The team will now travel to Reykjavik to face third-placed Iceland without their star striker.
