“The World Team Championship was full of unforgettable moments for me. The whole team got excited when we learned I would be facing Hikaru Nakamura, the world number two, a day before the game,” said Azerbaijani chess player Khagan Ahmad.
Ahmad (Rapid rating – 2290) commented on his surprising victory over American grandmaster Hikaru Nakamura (FIDE Blitz rating – 2804) at the World Blitz Team Championship held in London, Idman.biz reports.
Speaking to the official website of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, he reflected on the game and the tournament atmosphere:
“The match against Nakamura started with a bit of nervous tension. He made some mistakes, and then tried to find a way to force a draw. There was pressure throughout the game. I admit, winning made me very happy — this was my first-ever victory over such a strong opponent. I hope it won’t be the last.”
Despite Ahmad’s individual success, his team, Turkish Airlines, failed to qualify for the Round of 16. He expressed gratitude to his teammates:
“I want to thank our captain, Mr. Özgür, and all the players I competed alongside. Our team, made up of young talents, performed admirably and made a positive impression at the World Championship. I’m also grateful to everyone who congratulated me after my game with Nakamura.”
Ahmad also highlighted a special moment after his win:
“It was a great feeling to see Azerbaijani grandmaster Rauf Mammadov, who was playing for another team, watching the game. He was the first to congratulate me after the match, and I want to sincerely thank him — our national champion.”
