Isgandarli’s Boluspor Career Turns Sour - Will his time abroad end?

At the start of the year, on January 3, Vusal Isgandarli made a transfer from Albania’s top-flight team Egnatia to Boluspor, a team in Turkiye’s First League.

As reported by Idman.biz, on the day following his transfer, we published an article titled “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back,” suggesting that this was a poor career move for the Azerbaijani player. Although we would have preferred to be wrong, given he’s a fellow Azerbaijani, Isgandarli responded with a laughing emoji, which, far from annoying us, actually made us hopeful that he had confidence in himself and would represent Azerbaijan well in Turkiye.

It turns out, however, that we may have been too reserved in our doubts. Isgandarli didn’t just take two steps back – he took several more. At the time, this outcome was also within the realm of possibility, though Lenin’s 1904 article title, “One Step Forward, Two Steps Back,” felt quite fitting.

So, what has proven our initial concerns right? Let’s dive into the details.

Vusal Isgandarli is now preparing to leave Boluspor due to serious issues: head coach Ufuk Kahraman has given him very few opportunities to play. The Azerbaijani forward hasn’t met expectations in Boluspor, having missed out on playing in 8 of the 12 matches held this season. In his last appearance, he only played for a single minute. Overall, his name hasn’t appeared on the lineup for 4 of the last 5 games, and in one of those, he only warmed the bench. Since the season began, he’s only played 100 minutes out of a possible 1080, with no goals or assists to his name.

Isgandarli is a talent of the now-defunct club Revan. The 29-year-old striker has previously represented clubs such as Simurg, Zira, Keshla (now Shamakhi), Keciorengucu (in Ankara, Turkiye), Sumqayit, and Egnatia. His contract with Boluspor is set to expire in the summer of 2026.
