Neftchi have officially parted ways with head coach Samir Abasov following a meeting held earlier today between the club’s management and the coach to review the team’s performance this season.
According to Idman.Biz, the sides discussed the reasons behind the disappointing results and the overall development dynamics of the team.
The club noted that since signing his contract in October last year, Abasov had been given full support from the management - including complete authority over transfers and squad building. All 14 transfers made during the last off-season and after the start of the current campaign were carried out at his request and with his approval.
Despite initially set goals - to demonstrate creative, attacking football and to achieve strong results in all competitions - Neftchi have performed below expectations in the first 12 rounds of the season. The team collected only three wins, and the defeat to Imishli became the low point of the recent decline in quality.
The club proposed that Abasov resign out of respect for his contributions as both player and coach. However, Abasov rejected the idea, arguing that the current results are not as bad as portrayed and insisting that the team would finish in the top three by the end of the season. He also stated that if the club terminates the contract unilaterally, he will demand full compensation.
Following the meeting, Neftchi decided to dismiss Samir Abasov and thanked him for his work and professionalism. Senan Gurbanov will prepare the team for the upcoming match against Turan Tovuz on November 28, while the club continues its search for a new head coach.
